Final Reflection

1) Read through your blog from this semester. Recall all of the experiences you've had a long the way -- the highs, the lows -- the fun moments, and the moments of drudgery, and even the moments of dread.
I went through my post and the comments that were posted throughout my blog. There were definitely times that I have felt a lot of pressure trying to get multiple interviews recorded in a very short amount of time. It can be quite stressful when you run out of people close by to interview.

2) What sticks out to you as the most formative experience? The experience that you'll remember years later? What was your most joyous experience? What experience are you most proud of yourself for accomplishing?
The greatest experience that I got out of these assignments was to feel comfortable stepping out of my comfortable zone and not be afraid to get out there to interview random people. I ended up making closer connections talking to random people. I enjoyed the assignments where we were asked to step back and reflect on how this class actually helps us in life. There are not that many classes where someone is able to say that they can apply their knowledge/ skills learned in class to everyday life. This class really helped me see my strengths and weaknesses. I was able to better allocate time towards assignments and understand what “failure” to me really means.

3) At the beginning of the semester, I mentioned that I wanted each of you to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. And we repeated the mantra -- I am an entrepreneur. Now, at the end, do you see yourself as an entrepreneur? Do you think you have moved closer to developing an entrepreneurial mindset?
It’s nostalgic looking back at the first day of this semester. I remember repeating that mantra as confidently as I could have at the time. However, I was not able to fully grasp the concept. I didn’t fully convince myself that I was an entrepreneur. Looking back at it now, I would be able to confidently say that I am an entrepreneur. I applied skills to build an entrepreneurial mindset. I am able to keep a sharp eye out for problems, and I’m willing to offer a solution. I see things from a new perspective.

4) What is the one recommendation you would make to the students who are going to journey down this path in the future? What would you recommend they do to perform best in this course? What would you recommend they do to foster that mindset?
To the students who end up taking this course in the future, I encourage you to allocate enough time needed to complete the assignments ahead of time because some assignments can be very stressful if done last minute. Always keep an eye out for any recording we would need to do because it can be very difficult to record last-minute customers. Especially if you are doing it late at night, there may not even be people around you to interview. Lastly, this class is what you make of it. This means that if you actually put in the effort to do the assignments and meet the requirements, you will definitely pass this class. Although it is a lot of busy work, it’s manageable if you keep an open mindset.

Week 15 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
The biggest surprise to me in the reading was when the author mentioned that the only lend money to women because studies have shown that women are more likely than men to reinvest profits in the household and to support others in their borrowing group.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was confused at why they wanted to give information about their loans through text messaging. I understand that it might be easier in communication to an extent, but I feel like it doesn’t give the other party much privacy when that lights up on their phone as a notification to pay money for loans.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
If you were asked by someone in a poor area if they could borrow money from you, what would you say? I’m curious because the author mentioned that in general in order to truly use microfinance to help eradicate poverty, they shouldn’t turn any poor person away.

Did you have any other motives for starting a nonprofit with lots of small donations from friends? I’m curious because the author says that his initial motive was because he had no money of his own and no interested investors.

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
I would disagree on the fact that text messaging being a better way of communication of loans. As mentioned in question #2, I would think that it makes it a little less private for the other party that is needing to pay the money.

Elevator Pitch No. 4

1) Final Elevator Pitch!

2) A reflection on the feedback you received from your last pitch.
For my final pitch I have refined my business from being only focused on the Greek community, to being more focused on other students as well. I have gotten many people asking me to consider expanding my business to a wider range of people. I decided that it would be best to start small and gradually increasing my service. I have also been told to speak a little slower, and clearer.

3) What did you change, based on the feedback?
Based on my feedback, I refined my business accordingly to #2 above. I met the minute goal as requested and I spoke a little slower and clearer.

Venture Concept No. 2

1) Provide, again, your venture concept description:

Brief introduction:
Being in a sorority helped me identify potential opportunities that was brought to my attention. One of which is the lack of healthy food options available to sororities and fraternities. Although there may be a salad bar or vegetables, many of them are not fresh/ organic. Therefore, I came up with “GreekGarden” which is a catering service for Greek life on campus. It would definitely help fix unmet needs in my own sorority as well as others. *I would like to eventually incorporate this into campus for other students not in Greek life as well. *

Opportunity:
*I want to note that the change I would like to make, is to eventually incorporate this service to a wider range of people. For example, the whole campus, instead of just the Greek community. *
Aimed at sorority/ fraternity meal plans, “GreekGarden” helps provide healthier meals throughout the week. It is a catering service, once a week on Mondays, where fresh, organic fruits and vegetables would be delivered to fraternities and sororities. In this one day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner will contain only freshly cooked meals. Since Monday is usually set off for “chapter” (meetings) in many sororities, many girls have to dress up for these meetings. I thought that if they had to dress up nicely for dinner, the food itself should be highly authentic. Therefore, it would be a great day to make the majority of Greek life on campus happy by bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to the table. I am only starting off with one day a week, because many people that I interviewed loved the food as is. Starting off with one day and gradually incorporating healthier food options everyday into Greek life on campus, is my goal.

How did this happen?
Unfortunately being in college means that some people might be off on their own for the first time. This might entail not knowing how to cook a healthy meal because many are looking for a fast and easy meal to make. The last thing a busy college student would want is an hour long waiting line to order food. As a result, colleges must plan to make fast served food for hundreds of students. This proves likewise for sororities and fraternities on campus. With hundreds of people in Greek life on campus, the chefs and kitchen staff must work twice as hard to make the sorority sisters’ and fraternity brothers’ food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In order to accommodate busy schedules for everyone, the food must be made in bulky and satisfy hunger. This might mean fast food, or meals that were frozen. In conclusion, the meals might not be as healthy as one would have anticipated because of the crunch for time.

Innovation:
Imagine a world where we could be able to eat healthy without having to pay for it through wasting time and effort making a meal. I am starting this business venture because I want to incorporate healthier meals into every life in sororities and fraternities. I am starting in one centralized area (Greek life) at first because I want to see how far this whole concept would prosper. If I would be able to start in a small generalized location, say in one sorority, and make my way up to the university, it would prove that people are supporting my ideas for incorporating heathier foods in our diets. It may not be easy for you, personally, to make a healthy lunch and dinner. That is why I want to implement a catering service where we come to the sororities and fraternities to help out the kitchen staff by providing healthy alternatives to dishes.

Venture Concept:
Customers would switch to this because it provides a better alternative to eating on campus. Especially if you are in a sorority or fraternity, GreekGarden would help implement a healthier way of living into college student’s lives. The chief competitors would be any business that Housing Corps. is associated with in regards to foods. My business will work but starting out small in one sorority or fraternity, and gradually integrating healthier alternatives into Greek life. Eventually, I would hope to expand to a greater network, such as the entire campus. I would hope to give everyone a chance to experience a healthier lifestyle.

My most important resource would be my connection to a sorority and know the different bylaws in my sorority. I can get my information through my sorority on campus. I think it would be beneficial to know how the contracts are written and how much extra money the sorority has to spend on luxuries like a catering service.

Next for this venture is to go out and talk to different sororities and fraternities and see how their budget will accommodate a catering service. Many sororities and fraternities have extra money that they would be willing to spend on a service like GreekGarden.

Next for me, would be to gradually increase from a small centralized location to a larger one. For example, I would like to one day incorporate this healthier meal alternative, not only for Greek life, but also for the university if business is successful in a small-scale sorority or fraternity.

2) Provide a summary of the feedback you received from your previous venture concept description. You certainly want to include the student feedback, but you may also include the feedback you received from others during the "What's Next" exercise. You want to summarize all of the feedback, but be sure to place an emphasis on what people recommended you change about your idea. (In other words, don't just describe the positive feedback.)
In regards to my feedback so far, many people have told me to consider expanding my business. For example, may people really want to not only have my catering service in sororities and fraternities, but also on campus as well, for the students not in the Greek community. I think that this would be a great idea, personally. Also, some sorority sisters told me that it would also be a bit difficult so negotiate with Housing Corps. for a catering service. They recommended that I start my business off small and then gradually explain/ show Housing Corps. why my service is wanted. The positive feedback that I received also gave me confidence that many people would love to have this kind of service.

3) Describe how you changed your venture concept, based on what you learned from the feedback.
I changed my venture concept by adding in that I would like to eventually incorporate my service to a wider range of people. For example, I would like to extend my service out to other students that aren’t in Greek life as well. Since there was a lot more positive feedback than negative, I didn’t change much on my venture concept.

Week 14 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
I was surprised that there weren’t more steps listed when the author talked about the steps that will help innovative people to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
The book started to get a little confusing when the author started to talk about corporate entrepreneurship. I feel like this is mostly due to the face that I don’t have much experience with this.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
When you are developing your venture teams, do you need to have any prior knowledge before you do so? Is there any statistic data that is needed when you structure for an intrapreneurial climate? I feel that I don’t have enough knowledge about these subjects.

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
I don’t believe that the author was wrong is any of the information. However, I do think that this is mainly due to my lack of knowledge and experience in this field.

Google Gold

1) A discussion of your general approach and strategy to search engine optimiation (SEO). What were some of the activities you did for each blog post to pursue SEO?
In order to approach SEO, I made sure that each of my posts contained the title of my assignment. Also, for all of my posts, I made sure to type in tags that would help me locate the assignment. I have also created a name for my business. This way, it was easy for me to find my blog out of everyone else’s.

2) What were your keywords. How did you select those keywords? Did you change or refine your keywords through the semester?
Keywords throughout the semester included the titles of every assignment. Also, I made sure to include the week that I was completing the assignment. This made it a lot easier for me to not only locate my assignment within my own blog, but easier for me to search as well. I also selected my business name “GreekGarden” specifically knowing that no one else would have the same business name.

3) How did you use social media to enhance your SEO efforts? What your your surprises or general impression of using social media to improve your blog's profile? Was social media generally receptive of your blog, or did it get ignored?
Using a social network such as Google to write my blogs really helped me in creating a network of supporters. It is easy to navigate and use. Many people who have the link to my blog are able to comment on it and give me feedback. This helped strengthen my own confidence or likewise build it up.

4) What was your most "viral" post? In other words, which post obtained the most traffic? Why do you think?
My most viral post would have to be the “What’s Next?” post. Many people thought my idea was really creative because it would help their shopping experiences online.

5) Finally, did you make it to the first page of Google results for your keywords? If not, what page of results did you make it to?
Yes, I did make it to the first page of Google when I typed in “GreekGarden IA Blog”.

Week 13 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
I really liked the fact that the author broke the reading down from the images shown. For example, the author not only broke down Valuation of the Venture into three parts (Differing Goals of Buyer and Seller, Emotional Bias of the Seller, and Reasons for the Acquisition), but also elaborated in detail on each individual subset.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I started getting really confused when the author started talking about The Pricing Formula. This might quite possibly be due to the lack of knowledge I have in this area.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
Does estimating the value of the intangibles in the “years of profit” figure ever become reliable? Does the control factor determine the future success of your business? It would be great to know if it’s a model or a reliable prediction.

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
In all honestly, I didn’t find anything wrong. This is mostly due to my lack of knowledge in this particular chapter. It really started to get into the logistics of the business and this subject isn’t my strongest suit.

Celebrating Failure

1) Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class, or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.
The one thing I’ve failed to do this semester was wake up in time for my morning class. My class is at 10:40am, which doesn’t seem too early or too late. However, upon taking 18 credits this semester, tests and exams for each class start piling up. Therefore, I am always up until 6am studying for each class. My exams for each class alternate every week, so there is never a moment in my life where I can take a breather. It becomes really stressful and balancing my sorority (social life) and my clubs (academic life) becomes a real struggle. I’ve had to sacrifice my social life many times, but I have always put my academics first. Unfortunately though, sleeping at 6am every day ends up making me late to my morning class. I have even missed a couple quizzes because of it. I have yet to make it in time to my morning class ONCE before interrupting the professor by walking through the front door.

2) Tell us what you learned from it.
I learned that sacrifices need to be made. Not only did I sacrifice my social life for good grades, but I also had to sacrifice going to my morning class from time to time. It all really comes down to choosing what matters more to you: the good grade on your Organic Chemistry 2 exam or sleep? Honestly, it sounds terrible, but you do what needs to be done. I try to catch up on my lack of sleep on the weekends (assuming I don’t have an exam Monday).

3) Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure.
Failure is really rough. Nobody fails and feels proud on the inside. Failure just points out the gray areas in your life that you can learn from and change. Failing something in life can be emotionally devastating for an individual. However, we must tell ourselves that it is not the end of the world. There will be up and downs. There will be brighter days to come. Hey, it can only get better from here right? It’s all how you look at it. You must have the right perspective in mind to get back up from falling to try again or move on. This class has changed my perspective on failure because it taught me that success is what you make of it. If you put in the time and effort, the chance of you failing the course is minimal. However, even if you do fail (to complete an assignment) you have to get back up. The only way to redeem yourself is to not make that same mistake in the future. If the same mistake is made, so be it, and there will be better days to come. Failing can either hinder you or cause you to work harder to succeed. It’s all how you look at it.

My Exit Strategy

1) Identify the exit strategy you plan to make.
The exit strategy I plan to take would be to stay with my business for several years. My business called “GreekGarden” is a catering service, once a week on Mondays, where fresh, organic fruits and vegetables would be delivered to fraternities and sororities. In order to see my business to succeed, I must wait to see the results after implementing the business. If deemed successful, I would like to pass the business down the family line.

2) Why have you selected this particular exit strategy?
I have selected this strategy because it is a business largely dependent on my customers’ opinion. Therefore, I must see it through to the end, whether successful or not. My ultimate goal is to gradually incorporate healthier food options into Greek life on campus.

3) How do you think your exit strategy has influenced the other decisions you've made in your concept?
My exit strategy influenced my growth intentions because it made me realize that I cannot just simply start and end the business in 2 years. It is a tedious business that I would be willing to dedicate my time and effort into.

Week 12 Reading Reflection

1) I liked the fact that this chapter broke down the different section/stages of managing a business. It was nice that they really dissected it out for us step by step.

2)  I started getting lost at the section of “Entrepreneurial Strategy Matrix”. I just couldn’t grasp that idea. Also, I was a confused at the part about the uncollectible accounts.

3) How often does one update the Entrepreneurial Strategy Matrix? Or is it a fixed concept that is proven?

4) I enjoyed learning about this new chapter and I don't believe he was wrong about anything. However, I honestly don’t know enough about this subject to make a reliable refute.

What's Next

What is next?

Existing Market:
Step 1: The next step for me would be to educate people on the way the app would work. Also, I would want to implement this software onto Amazon itself, so it is available for anyone deciding to purchase glasses. It is rather frustrating when you want to buy a pair of glasses, but the frames don’t look good on your face. That is why I think it would be a great addition to have on Amazon or Ebay before you go to checkout.

Step 2:

* The last video I recorded was done though Skype, hence I apologize for the clicking and terrible attempt to edit the video.

Step 3: According to my interviews, it seems that it would be a good idea to make the virtual fitting have an option for side-by-side comparison. My first interviewee brought up a good point about wanting to see different frames side-by-side so she can compare the different colors and sizes. It would definitely help someone debating between multiple frames. It would also save a lot of space in your browser by limiting the amount of tabs open per product.

New Market:
*For this portion of the assignment, I did a mixture of videos/audios and phone interviews. I could not figure out how to record a phone interview, so I just typed out the responses the last 2 customers gave. Since their responses were quite short, it was easy for me to type as they spoke.

Step 1: I would want to target college students buying glasses, so I guess parents who are out of college would be the opposite of that.

Step 2: I think my product would create value to those who aren’t specifically buying glasses online. This is because many people might want to buy other accessories on their faces, such as sunglasses or other different types of eye protection.

Step 3:

*I interviewed my mom and dad as my last two interviewees. Both were phone interviews.

Question 1: How do you think this product might help to meet customers like you?
Answers:
Customer 1 (my mom): “Although I don’t wear glasses, this product would be really useful to me when I go shop for sunglasses online.”
Customer 2 (my dad): “I never like shopping online for glasses, but I buy a lot of goggles to go swimming in... this would be useful to know whether the full face goggles would fit around my nose and eyes.”

Question 2: What kind of adaptations to my product do you think I should make to be successful in the new market?
Answers:
Customer 1 (my mom): "I think seeing my sunglasses side-by-side would help me pick the right colors for my face instead of having multiple tabs open.”
Customer 2 (my dad): “Honestly, as long as the goggles fit my face, I’m not too picky about anything else. Colors would be nice though… but nothing too girly.”

Step 4:  When my dad mentioned that it could be useful for him when he buys swimming goggles online, I felt like I found a way to further my business. Instead of targeting people who buy reading glasses, I can make the product into something more variable. My product does not have to be limited to only glasses, but also sun glasses or swimming goggles.
In conclusion, I think interviewing older adults deemed beneficial. It made me realize that even though they might not need reading glasses, but they can also have other needs that can be fulfilled by my product. For example, buying sunglasses or swim goggles.

Week 11 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
I thought it was really interesting when the author said that “Innovation initiative frequently fail”. I never really thought about it, but the author seems to have a point.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was confused by what architectural innovation exactly was, even though the author explained it. It seemed to be a very confusing topic.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
Has the author ever came up with a successful innovation? If so how did he come up with the idea and implement it successfully?

4)Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
I did not disagree with the author on any of his points.

Amazon Whisperer

Describe the revenue drivers you currently include in your business concept for this class. Revenue drivers are the different ways you make money.
The revenue drivers include people who shop online for a new pair of glasses through websites such as Amazon, Ebay etc. that have the issue with buying pairs of frames that might not look best on their face.

Describe what kind of product offering you believe should be next. What's the next thing your customers want?
I believe the next thing my customers want is a model of themselves to put on glasses to see how it looks like on their face and that the style is suitable for their needs. Therefore, they can know what it will look like on them before they purchase.

Describe how this "next" thing will enhance your existing product/service offering. Does it improve the user experience, does it increase customer switching costs, does it foster customer loyalty, etc.?
I think this "next" thing will enhance my existing service by allowing my customers to understand what products fit them and how frames will complement their facial features. I believe this will improve the user experience because it provide an easier way to try on frames without spending over $100 on frames that don’t look good on them.

Go to Amazon and try to find a product that is similar to the one you want to offer next. Describe the product. Include a picture of the product.

Amazon Product:
Example of snapchat filter:

This was the closest thing I could find that I could find that represents my product. Since my product would be virtual, it was harder to find an actual product image. This picture represents a person looking into their webcam and virtually try on a pair of glasses. (Similar to the snapchat feature were people appear to be wearing glasses in a filter.)

What are the customer reviews for the product? What, exactly, do customers not like about the product? What do they like about it?
The customer reviews for the product are good. Customers like that there is a model in the picture so that they could see what their glasses might look like on them. One customer ( Michele Wehinger on September 16, 2015)  said that “[It is] hard to buy eyewear online (as I'd much rather try them on to see if they fit my face)”.

Describe what design/usability changes you'd make to the product.
I would change the way the product is displayed in the pictures. Instead of just a model, I would make it possible for people to use their webcam to virtually put on the glasses. Therefore, they can actually see how the product would look on their face.

Describe why you think this product would make a good addition to your current product/service offering.
I think this product would make a great addition to my current service because of my customers would be able to utilize this feature when buying products online that they can’t physically try on in stores.

Growing My Social Capital

1) One person must be a domain expert in your industry.

I researched people who would potentially be interested in my service of healthy food. I found someone named Bethany who makes healthy food on a daily basis and she helped describe to me what some of her favorite foods were. She could make for bulk mass (like college students) and just for herself as well. I noticed her blog and left comments on it. She can help me understand what people like in healthy foods.

2) One person must be an expert on your market.

For this person I chose our house mom in my sorority. She knows Greek life in our community best (in my opinion) and is able to educate me on my budgeting of my service. I know that she would be reliable in knowing what the Greek community would like in meals as well.

3) One person must be an important supplier to your industry.

One person that would be an important supplier would be our chef in our sorority. He used to cook meals in his own business before coming to our sorority. He knows what foods are the best. With his knowledge, it wouldn’t be too hard in finding fresh fruits and vegetables.

4) Finally: Reflect.

Know all these people really got me a lot closer to the Greek community here on campus and it would help to implement my business “GreekGarden” a lot easier.

Week 10 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
I was surprised when they talked about how the financial information pulls together all the information presented in the other segments of the business and that these segments have big meaning.
2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was a little confused when they mentioned that once the operating budget has been prepared, the entrepreneur can proceed to the next phase of the budget process, the cash flow budget. I thought there would be more steps involved.
3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
Why is it that the traditional accounting equation is not: assets + liabilities = owner’s equity? It sounds correct to me. Also, how is it that capital investments or capital expenditures are expected to last beyond one year? It seems like a pretty difficult task.
4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
I don’t disagree, but the concept of the cash-flow budget has always been hard to understand.

Elevator Pitch No. 3

1) The pitch. Same as last time, 1-minute long. No Web cams. No sitting. Be dynamic! Upload the video to YouTube (as you do with all of your videos) and post the link.

2) A reflection on the feedback you received from your last pitch.
Some of the feedback that I got was to try and make my pitch a little longer to the 1 minute time period. Also, I was told to try to add a little bit more detail about my service.

3) What did you change, based on the feedback?
As a result, I ended up elaborating a little bit more on my idea of “GreekGarden”. I also made the speech a little longer than my last.

My Secret Sauce

1) Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique. What is it about you, exactly, that makes you different? Write this up in a detailed list.

1. I am a really motivated person that puts all effort into what I want to do. For example: If I want to pass a class, I will do whatever it takes to do so, even if it includes all-nighters, weight loss, and loss of social life. I am not a person that settles to take the class another semester.

2. I am a perfectionist. I don’t settle for something that I think isn’t my best product. I am really detail oriented and do things to the best of my ability. I rarely let little information slip away.

3. I am concerned for others. I listen to other people’s problems and give advice when needed. Many people come to me for life advice because I give them my honest opinion to help them.

4. I would do anything to see the people in my life happy. For example, I would sacrifice everything for my family. I am not only able to, but mentally ready to, drop everything at any given moment for the thought of someone else’s possible happiness.

5. I don’t push things until the last minute. I like to plan ahead and get the job done.

2) Interview the five people who know you the best. Record each interview. In your blog post, please post each interview, as well as a two-three sentence summary of each interview, explaining what your key takeaways are.

Brian explains that I am a sociable person. I am able communicate with different types of people.
My mom tells me that I am a really motivated person.
Chris states that I am a very hard worker. He says that I am also very motivated. He says that I don't give up easily even if I am in a difficult situation.
Jeff states that I listen to what people say. He also says that I learn from my mistakes to not repeat the same mistakes in the future.
This interview was in my native language to my dad who doesn't speak much English. He states that I am very focused in my studies.

3) Reflect on the differences. How do you see yourself, and how do others see you? Are there differences in how you assess yourself compared to others? What do you think causes these differences? Do you think your interviewees are correct about you? Finally, going back to your list from part 1, would you make any corrections to the list? How?
I would also add to my list that others see me as someone who is able to learn from mistakes. I would also add that I am very focused on my studies in school. I think the interviewees really knew me on a personal level. Sometimes people see other parts of me that I don't notice.

Week 9 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
Knowing that not only does the distribution costs affect pricing decisions, but also the product’s life-cycle stage really surprised me.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I’m confused on why “competitive edge” factors need to be noted because many services are generally known to be competitive to each other.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
Are there any advantages and/or disadvantages to primary data collecting? Is there a specific crowd targeted in primary data vs. secondary data collecting?

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?
I disagree when the reading said that “A new venture will survive only if a market exists for its product or service.” I believe that there are other factors that come into play when it comes to having a venture be successful.

Idea Napkin No. 2

1) You. Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. What are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?
My name is Cindy and I am actively involved with my sorority on campus.

2) What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).

3) Who are you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?
I am offering this service for those in sororities and fraternities on campus because my catering service is aimed specifically at Greek life.

4) Why do they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will actually pay you money to use your product or service.
They care about my service because it is a common unmet need. People constantly want to eat healthier and live a healthier lifestyle. My service helps to kick start that aspiration. What you eat affects you in the long run, and eating healthier is always a great option.

5) What are your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else? Also: what do you have that nobody else has?
“GreekGarden” aims to help the sororities and fraternities on campus recognize the benefits of eating healthy. There is no meal catering service in Greek life, here on campus, which I have heard of yet. This is what sets us apart.

In addition to these five elements, please spend a paragraph evaluating whether you believe these elements fit together or whether there are aspects of your business concept that are weaker / out-of-joint with the others.
I believe that the elements written fit together. “GreekGarden” aims to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to sororities and fraternities, contributing to a healthier lifestyle in the long run. Majority of Greek life find that lack of healthier food options in sororities and fraternities is an unmet need. I do not notice any out-of-joint concepts.

Feedback memo: I didn't really alter my napkin idea too much because my feedback supported my service. The 5 main points that I took from my feedback was:
1. Most people are unaware of how healthy the food in Greek life really is.
2. Many describe food in Greek life as sub-par.
3. Many are unsure how healthy the food on campus actually is.
4. People started to lower their standards on eating food on campus.
5. People feel refreshed after eating healthy food.

Week 8 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
I thought it was really interesting that they chose to discuss the importance of evaluating venture capitalists for a proper selection. It was interesting to see them noting the levels of the Factors in Venture Capitalists’ Evaluation Process.
2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was confused on the whole business angels portion of the reading. I wasn’t too sure why there were both advantages and disadvantages to it. There seems to be more advantage than disadvantages.
3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
Why did there seem to be more advantages than disadvantages of the business angels? The percentages of Frequently Rated Essential in New-Ventures are based off of what?
4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

I disagree on some of the ratios, such as the typical deal sizes and the expected return percentages. I would like to know where those ratios came from.

Half-way Reflection

1) Tenaciousness is a skill. What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?
In order to keep up with the requirements, sign onto eLearning at least once a day to see when your next assignments are due. Also, you must look at the assignments and its requirements. If you need to record, you must find time in the week to do the recordings. It is better to plan your week ahead of time than letting the assignments catch up to you.

2) Tenaciousness is also about attitude. Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this?
I felt like giving up after the 3rd or 4th recording because I truly just did not have time in my schedule to walk around Turlington and find people to interview. The thought of failing a simple assignment because I couldn’t find time to record really bothered me. This class is what you make of it.

3) Three tips. What are three tips you would offer next semester's student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing the 'tenacious mindset' ?

This class is what you make of it. This means that if you actually put in the effort to do the assignments and meet the requirements, you will definitely pass this class. Although it is a lot of busy work, it’s manageable if you keep an open mindset. If you go in thinking that there’s no way for you to complete the assignments, then there is no way you will be able to pass this class. Also, when you do the recordings, make sure you add them into your post to get credits. Also, keep in mind that it could be a lot worse than you have it right now. I find it better to do hands-on assignments than to have quizzes and exams every couple weeks.

The Twenty Percent

1) Find a business owner and talk to them about their customers. Who do they think their target customers are? Where do they find their customers? What are their customer's demographics? What kinds of media do their customers consume? Etc.
The business owner that I talked to was Kayla. She sells her own jewelry through an online site called “Etsy”. Her target customers are online and the customers usually go to her site by the word-of-mouth. She usually posts her website and new jewelry pictures on Facebook for all her friends to see and buy. If the customer has problems, they usually send her a message through her online website and it sends the complaints straight to her email.

2) Ask 'target customers': What are their customers' problems? What are customers currently doing to fix their problems? How big, on a scale of 1-10, is this problem in their customers' lives? What are some of the bigger problems their customers are dealing with? Do their customers have a budget allocated to fix this problem?

(Sorry for shaky camera work)

3) Reflect.

Although the entrepreneur did not want to be filmed, I did find out that she does get frequent complaints through her email. However, I quickly found out that she does reply to those emails and does whatever she can to accommodate the issues that people face. The complaints that she usually gets are included in the customer interviews.

Week 7 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
The biggest surprise for me was how one’s beliefs are ingrained into even the smallest decision making choices, such as buying a razor. (As noted in the reading.)

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was confused on why social status and self-image is considered a middle-of-the-spectrum decision.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
Does the degree of decision importance (shallow, middle-of-the-spectrum, or deep) change over time and in different cultures? How are you able to generalize what the population denotes as a “shallow decision” when it could be a crucial decision for many others? I am curious of how they formed the chart and how reliable it is.

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

I disagree with the chart that the reading provided that is titled, “What is at stake?”. I personally do not believe that deciding on a place to live is more important than visiting a clinic in regards to a medical condition. I think that fixing the medical condition would be more in need of attention than picking the perfect place to live.

Free Money

1. Where will you go?
I went to a residence hall where most people tend to be located at night.
2. What kind of people will you approach?
I approached the RA (Resident Assistants) on each floor who weren’t expecting me to walk towards them.
3. What will you say to get the conversation started?
I walked up to them and asked if they were the RAs on the floor.
4. What is your plan for the conversation?
I walked up to people who were in the commons area to see if they are the RAs. If they were, I told them that they were appreciated for being a resident assistant in the dorm and asked if they would accept my dollar of appreciation.
5. Out of five attempts, how many dollar bills do you think you will be able to give away?
I thought I'd be able to give away at least 3 dollars and I was able to give away all 5 dollars.
6. Second, be sure you record these encounters. Feature at least 2 recordings.
Here are two of my customers who gave a very positive response:

7. What are your reflections on this exercise? Was giving away a dollar easier or harder than you imagined? Were your predictions correct or incorrect? If they were incorrect, why? What assumptions did you make about the people you planned to talk to, which were wrong?

I realized that complimenting people on their rarely recognized/ appreciated performance helps put people in a better mood. Giving them money also made all of the customers smile. Giving away a dollar was much easier than I imagined because many people weren’t opposed to accepting free money. I assumed that people would be super cautious and hesitant on accepting money from a stranger unexpectedly.

Elevator Pitch No. 2

1) The pitch. Same as last time.

2) A reflection on the feedback you received from your last pitch.
Many people told me that it would be better if I wore business attire and I decided to change into business attire for this video. My last pitch was lengthy so I kept it short and simple this time, as requested. I was also told to make less pauses and have the pitch flow better.

3) What did you change, based on the feedback?
I wore business attire this time. I kept my pitch short and simple this time. I did not pause for long periods of time.

Week 6 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?
I thought that the profitability chart in the reading was really interesting. I had no idea that security brokers and dealers where considered a more profitable industry than the soft drink company.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I was really confused because all throughout the excerpt, it kept mentioning the five forces that determine the long-run profitability of any industry. However, I was not able to locate a list of the five forces in the reading.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
Why didn’t you provide a clear list of the five forces? It would be very helpful in having people follow along in the reading. Why were there thirteen subject terms listed in the beginning reading, but only five forces that were important enough to mention in the reading? It didn’t make any sense to me.

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

I didn’t think that there was anything wrong with the reading because the author seemed to have sufficient charts and graphs to support the comments.

Customer Interviews No. 3

1) Describe your interviewing strategy.
The interviewing strategy we were told to approach comes from John Mullins, a business/strategy expert at the London Business School. I wrote a short description on what my business entails on an index card/booklet and asked for the customer’s reactions. The paragraph written on the card is read to you by the first customer I interviewed. I asked a range of people in fraternities and sororities because that’s the audience that “GreekGarden” aims at. “GreekGarden” helps provide healthier meals throughout the week. It is a catering service, once a week on Mondays, where fresh, organic fruits and vegetables would be delivered to fraternities and sororities. In this one day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner will contain only freshly cooked meals. “GreekGarden” gradually incorporates healthier food options everyday into Greek life on campus.

2) Conduct the interviews. As always, 5 interviews, video recorded.

3) Reflect on what you learned. What did you learn from the interviews? What surprised you the most? What do you expect to change as an outcome of these interviews?

I found it very surprising to know that it would be hard to implement because the sorority Housing Corps. controls a strict ordering schedule. I didn’t know that existed from this side of interviewing. However, a lot of sorority sisters thought that it would be a great idea to implement if I could start out small in one sorority house and gradually work my way up to other houses.

Idea Napkin No. 1

1) You. Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. What are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?
My name is Cindy and I am actively involved with my sorority on campus. Being in a sorority helped me identify potential opportunities that was brought to my attention.

Week 5 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations? I found it surprising that there was actually a formula for profitability and liquidity. I liked how the equations were neatly written and you could see what was being multiplied with what.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you. I was confused when the book stated that assuming debt too early lead to new venture fails. If you know that there is going to be debt, shouldn’t it be inevitable that there is going to be a flaw in your business anyways.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?
What exactly constitutes over-reliance on one customer? Is there a line that one shouldn’t cross? Should I know what the small profit ventures are as well as the high profit ventures are?

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?  I disagree that they said that product design leads to failure. I think that this can lead to new innovations.

Interviewing Customers No. 2

1) Find an opportunity. The opportunity I chose to investigate was the quality of the foods in sororities/ fraternities.
Afterthoughts: The opportunity I chose to investigate stayed the same as previously.

2) Figure out who might have the unmet need. The people who would have a say in the quality of food served by sororities and fraternities would be the sorority sisters and fraternity brothers themselves. I went and interviewed girls who were in sororities, as well as guys who were in fraternities.
Afterthoughts: I interviewed the right people last time however I think that I could have intervened the chef of the sororities instead. Therefore, this time I went ahead and interviewed the chefs of a couple sororities as well.

3) Come up with a list of questions. The general questions I would ask each person varied according to their responses, but for each interview, I stuck with the same general questions.
a) What sorority/ fraternity are you in?
b) Tell me a little bit about the quality of food in your sorority/ fraternity. Healthy? Unhealthy? What are the options?
c) Do you usually go to the sorority/ fraternity for lunch and dinner? If not, do you grab a late plate?
d) Do you have any foods that you wish were in your sorority/ fraternity?
e) During the weekends, when there are no meals, how do you get food? UF meal plan?
f) Would you say eating in a sorority/ fraternity is good or a bad idea?
Afterthoughts: I made a change in the questions for the cooks in the sororities.
a) What sorority/ fraternity are you cooking for?
b) Tell me a little bit about the meals each week, is it always the healthy options? What are some examples of meals that you cook the sorority sisters?
c) Are the meals always freshly cooked from scratch? Is it canned foods?
d) Are there a variety of options for fruits and vegetables?

4) Go talk to customers! I interviewed 5 different people who are in either sororities or fraternities. They did not want to be filmed due to some honest comments on the foods, and I respected that.

a) Shonglee- Chi Omega sorority sister
a) What sorority/ fraternity are you in? Chi Omega
b) Tell me a little bit about the quality of food in your sorority/ fraternity. Healthy? Unhealthy? What are the options? It is health for the most part, wish I could be healthier.
c) Do you usually go to the sorority/ fraternity for lunch and dinner? If not, do you grab a late plate? Yea, for what I pay I grab a late plate. Sometimes I don’t wake up on time.
d) Do you have any foods that you wish were in your sorority/ fraternity? Fresher vegies.
e) During the weekends, when there are no meals, how do you get food? UF meal plan? I go to Publix to get my own food.
f) Would you say eating in a sorority/ fraternity is good or a bad idea? A great idea because it reminds me to eat.

b) Sonnie- Chi Omega sorority chef
a) What sorority/ fraternity are you cooking for? Chi Omega
b) Tell me a little bit about the meals each week, is it always the healthy options? What are some examples of meals that you cook the sorority sisters? I cook potato casserole, green beans, poppy seed salad, and grasshopper pie
c) Are the meals always freshly cooked from scratch? Is it canned foods? I cook most all meals from scratch. Fresh chicken mostly.
d) Are there a variety of options for fruits and vegetables? Yes, we usually have broccoli, and a fruit bowl available.

c) Patrick- Kappa Sigma fraternity brother
a) What sorority/ fraternity are you in? Kappa nu
b) Tell me a little bit about the quality of food in your sorority/ fraternity. Healthy? Unhealthy? What are the options? It is really unhealthy. I wish that there could be healthier foods.
c) Do you usually go to the sorority/ fraternity for lunch and dinner? If not, do you grab a late plate? I don’t have a house on campus, so I get my late plates.
d) Do you have any foods that you wish were in your sorority/ fraternity? I wish there was more fish.
e) During the weekends, when there are no meals, how do you get food? UF meal plan? I go out to Subway to eat.
f) Would you say eating in a sorority/ fraternity is good or a bad idea? It’s a good idea to get all the meals in for the day.

d) Tanner- Theta Delta fraternity brother
a) What sorority/ fraternity are you in? Theta Delta
b) Tell me a little bit about the quality of food in your sorority/ fraternity. Healthy? Unhealthy? What are the options? It is okay, not too healthy.
c) Do you usually go to the sorority/ fraternity for lunch and dinner? If not, do you grab a late plate? I eat whenever I can.
d) Do you have any foods that you wish were in your sorority/ fraternity? I wish there was more of a variety of fish.
e) During the weekends, when there are no meals, how do you get food? UF meal plan? I go out to eat at restaurants.
f) Would you say eating in a sorority/ fraternity is good or a bad idea? I don’t think it’s a great idea, because I pay too much.

e) Felicia – Tri Delta sorority sister
a) What sorority/ fraternity are you in? Tri Delta
b) Tell me a little bit about the quality of food in your sorority/ fraternity. Healthy? Unhealthy? What are the options? I don’t have a meal plan in the sorority on campus.
c) Do you usually go to the sorority/ fraternity for lunch and dinner? If not, do you grab a late plate? I am inactive in the sorority.
d) Do you have any foods that you wish were in your sorority/ fraternity? I do remember wanting more fruits that were fresh.
e) During the weekends, when there are no meals, how do you get food? UF meal plan? I buy gfood from Walmart on the weekend.
f) Would you say eating in a sorority/ fraternity is good or a bad idea? I think it’s a great idea, I am just inactive this semester.

5) Tell us what you learned about the opportunity. After the interviews I feel that the opportunity is a great one to fix/ implement. It is definitely a rising issue among Greek life on campus. The quality of food can be increased.
Afterthoughts: This stayed the same after the seconds round of interviews. The quality of foods could be fixed, and there is still and unanimous approval of healthier foods.

6) Tell us what you learned about interviewing customers. I learned that finding people for a taped interview isn’t always easy. The first step is finding the potential audience and having them agree to an interview with you. The next is to have them know that you are taping them, and they might not always consent to it. I learned that the quality of Greek life food is a preferred option over UF Gator Dining. They all believed that paying for Greek life food is worth their money. Although healthier options of foods are favored, they food currently served isn’t widely opposed.
Afterthoughts: I think that still all applies. I recommend finding people who would want to be interviewed. I recommend, not being nervous. I recommend being calm and collected.
